New Gig
I am joining Insite as Technical Director.
I have had the pleasure of working with Paul Irving (Founder/President) and Kristin Beadle (UX/Design) over the years and have experienced their dedication and professionalism firsthand. This is a good fit that I am excited about.
I’ll be providing the same devotion I’ve had in my work to Insite and our clients, bringing new services and technology online for a wide variety of industries.
In my spare time, I’ll be providing consultation to numerous friends and colleagues in the startup realm.
Cheers.

Canceling FOODday – An Experiment in Eliminating Real World Spam
UPDATE: To cancel FOODday or This Week, email kateleeper@news.oregonian.com, or call Chet Jamison 503-294-4187. Also, this wasn’t the ordeal I thought it would be, but hopefully this will help someone.
The Oregonian’s FOODday is a weekly waste of paper and plastic for most people who receive it.
From what I know, it’s automatically sent to every household in Portland, and from everyone I talk to, it goes straight into the recycle bin.
My dad was outside one day when they delivered his copy of FOODday, he threw it back at the guy and said, “WHY ARE YOU THROWING GARBAGE ON MY PROPERTY?”
I’m writing about this as I think it will be an ordeal, and I’m writing directly to the editor of FOODday.
Dear Ms. Holmberg,
Please cancel my FOODday delivery ASAP.
My address is:
xxxxxxx
xxxxxxxThank you for your attention to this problem.

Let’s see how this goes,

FOODday
UPDATE: A response from The Oregonian:
Thanks for your prompt reply,
Yes, we would like to cancel This Week and FOODday. We subscribe to the
Sunday Oregonian only, and that’s the only paper we’d like to receive.I appreciate you forwarding my request to customer service.
For future reference, how may I email the customer service department?
Best,

Hi, Jake. I’ll forward your request to the customer service department — I can’t do anything on my end, I’m afraid. We’re the editorial department. And just to clarify, I think you want to cancel This Week? We’re not sending the actual FoodDay to anyone but subscribers to the paper, but we’re including food stories in This Week.
Dept. of Skateboarding
The Dept. got a new website last Thursday.
Today, they make the front page of Digg.
Nice job guys.

Amazon – XBOX – Bummer
My attempt to go consumerist crazy and buy the XBOX special on Amazon failed miserably.
Amazon went down. Yes, down. They can’t handle people wanting $100 Xboxes.
With this, and the recent Alexa problems, how does Amazon expect people to trust EC2 and S3? It seems THEY should be able to turn on extra machines when they have a special that millions of people are scrambling for.
I’m off to be thankful, my consumerism is done for the day.
Happy Thanksgiving!

I “hit it big” on the Internet
I met with Monica Garcia from the PSU Vanguard last Sunday about Platial.
This is what she wrote:

The only correction I have to make is my DJ name is Kola, not Koala, and sorry to all those “marketing monkeys” I may have offended.

Bye Tivo
Maybe it was a premonition that this was going to happen, but we got rid of our Tivo two weeks ago.
Marc @ O’Reilly has some good words:
