Canceling FOODday – An Experiment in Eliminating Real World Spam
UPDATE: To cancel FOODday or This Week, email kateleeper@news.oregonian.com, or call Chet Jamison 503-294-4187. Also, this wasn’t the ordeal I thought it would be, but hopefully this will help someone.
The Oregonian’s FOODday is a weekly waste of paper and plastic for most people who receive it.
From what I know, it’s automatically sent to every household in Portland, and from everyone I talk to, it goes straight into the recycle bin.
My dad was outside one day when they delivered his copy of FOODday, he threw it back at the guy and said, “WHY ARE YOU THROWING GARBAGE ON MY PROPERTY?”
I’m writing about this as I think it will be an ordeal, and I’m writing directly to the editor of FOODday.
Dear Ms. Holmberg,
Please cancel my FOODday delivery ASAP.
My address is:
xxxxxxx
xxxxxxxThank you for your attention to this problem.

Let’s see how this goes,

UPDATE: A response from The Oregonian:
Thanks for your prompt reply,
Yes, we would like to cancel This Week and FOODday. We subscribe to the
Sunday Oregonian only, and that’s the only paper we’d like to receive.I appreciate you forwarding my request to customer service.
For future reference, how may I email the customer service department?
Best,
–jake

Hi, Jake. I’ll forward your request to the customer service department — I can’t do anything on my end, I’m afraid. We’re the editorial department. And just to clarify, I think you want to cancel This Week? We’re not sending the actual FoodDay to anyone but subscribers to the paper, but we’re including food stories in This Week.

I just called Chet Jamison of the Oregonian at 503-294-4187 and he assured me that they process the cancellations on Wednesdays so I can expect to no longer receive them in the mail after next week’s paper comes. He knows I will call him back if they fail to cancel it because I was vocally assertive in my NEED to have it NO MORE.
Thank you for posting this information, I have been TRYING to get these delivered for a month and did not know how to order it!
I actually use the coupons that come with that paper (when friends give me theirs) and save substantial amounts using the $10 off Safeway coupons that are frequently inside!
But I totally get why it would be frustrating if you do not use it, in fact I often “collect” them from peoples driveways if I see them for a few days after delivery.
Thanks again for information.
I’ve recently moved to a new (used) home in SE Portland (from a N. PDX location where I had that spam stopped) and I discover the span in question is being thrown on my driveway WHEN
I’ve recently moved to a new (used) home in SE Portland (from a N. PDX location where I had that spam stopped) and I discover the span in question is being thrown on my driveway WHEN THERE IS VERY OBVIOUSLY A BRIGHT YELLOW OREGONIAN BIN ATTACHED TO MY MAILBOX POLE. WTF? I’m contacting them today to cease delivery or I’ll report them for littering and trespass.
Good luck. I’ve been trying to get them to stop littering my yard with that crap for YEARS. They stop for a couple of months and then start back up again. Takes three calls to get them to stop.
